When I visited Costa's new location, on a hot summer day, I couldn’t resist trying Gel di melone - the ultimate Sicilian summer refresher. Curious about its origins, I discovered some uncertainty. Many believe this refreshing dessert was introduced by the Arabs when they conquered Sicily in the ninth century, leaving a lasting influence on the island’s culinary traditions, particularly in sweets.
Costa's new location, located in a newly built culinary center near the beach, reflects the vision of the third generation - Antonio and Matteo Costa. In my eyes, this move seems to be a classic example of a historic business' third generation, seeking to blend tradition with modern innovation.
Looking back to where it all began - Costa Pasticceria was founded in Palermo in 1960 by Antonino Costa, who started as a young apprentice in a neighborhood bakery. After years of saving, he finally opened his own small pastry shop, crafting sweets and pastries that quickly won the hearts of many. Antonino’s passion for the craft was passed down to his son Riccardo, and today, Riccardo’s sons, Antonio and Matteo, carry on the family tradition. Their dedication has earned the Costa family prestigious recognition, including the honor of serving their delicacies to world leaders at the G8 summit.
Sitting in the new and shiny pastry shop, I couldn’t help but analyze my surroundings. While the interior design is contemporary, the pastries remain true to the Costa legacy - vibrant marzipans, decadent pastries, chocolates, cannoli, and, of course, cups of their refreshing desserts. In fact, there’s an entire Sicilian genre of desserts served in a cup, known as dolci al cucchiaio which translates to "spoon desserts."
As I took my first bite of the Gel di Melone, I was pleasantly surprised by its smooth yet wobbly consistency, the delicate sweetness of the melon, and the delightful crunch of chocolate and nuts sprinkled on top.
It was the perfect remedy for the heat and a lovely way to connect with the history of the Costa family’s three generations of bakers.
